Play Summary

Based on Maulana Azad’s “Ghubar-e- Khatir”, considered a masterpiece of Urdu literature, the play projects various aspects of Azad’s life at different stages of his life by using four characters representing his growth at different age. A freedom fighter, educationist, thinker and statesman, Maulana at the age of 57, reflects on his past life, especially his life in jail and his conversation with Jawaharlal Nehru over tea about tea. The past is brought to life through flashback .

The play begins featuring the childhood of Maulana Azad eventually taking the audience forward to peep into his younger days.

Notably, he was also a renowned scholar, and poet. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was well versed in many languages viz. Arabic, English, Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Bengali. Azad was a brilliant debater, as indicated by his name, Abul Kalam, which literally means “Lord of dialogue” He adopted the pen name Azad as a mark of his mental emancipation from a narrow view of religion and life.

Featuring veteran actor Tom Alter, the play focuses on the life of Maulana Azad and how he contributed to the Indian freedom struggle.

The play features some of the prominent theatre actors of the country; including M Sayeed Alam,Tom Alter, Ayman Ansari & Niti Phool.

Last but not the least, the play is produced by Pierrot’s Troupe – the theater company credited with giving many new, original and multi award wining entertaining productions to Hindi, Urdu & English Theatre: Ghalib In New Delhi, Maulana Azad, Big B, Ghalib, K L Saigal, Sons of Babur, Ghalib Ke Khat, Shah Jahan –O- Mumtaz, Pakistan Aur Alzheimer’s, To Gandhi Ji With Spelling Mistakes, Sir Iqbal etc.

The Playwright – London-based renowned expert on International Affairs, and an equally brilliant “fiction writer ” – Dilip Hiro.
