Play Summary

Adapted by the director from Dr. Harisuman Bisht’s short story with the title “Khuli Khirkkee Ke Doosari Taraf”, the play focuses on the struggle of the young wife of a soldier to assert her dignity and freedom in the midst of an oppressive feudal society.

Anandi, a young woman, is the central character. Her husband is a soldier who comes on leave to meet his young wife and ageing parents but is soon recalled to join duty on the war front. The worried family is receiving news of casualty on the war-front but there is no news about Anandi’s husband. Meanwhile, Anandi gives birth to a male child. After a long wait the family receives a telegram about the death of Anandi’s husband while fighting enemies on the front.

Nefarious elements of society and the village head try to exploit the young widow, indulging in character assassination of the lonely young woman. Unfazed, she fights her enemies courageously, asserting her dignity as widow and as the mother of an infant, taking over the responsibility as head of the family.
